ABC Babytalk: Autism Awareness
Monique Cain is a mother of two children diagnosed with Autism. Like any parent she wanted the very best for her children but it's hard work being a parent for children with autism. She faced criticism of her parenting, unhelpful suggestions of 'a bit more discipline' from strangers and had to fight heartbreaking battles to help her children adapt to life outside the family home.
After writing a series of children's books to explain her daughter's condition to her kindergarten class Monique now writes regularly about what might be helpful for other families grappling with a diagnosis of autism. Now Monique has written of her own experience of being an Autism parent. "Never Give Up!" is the honest story about her families’ autism journey with tips and tricks they have learned along the way.
In this week's Babytalk podcast you'll meet Monique Cain, hear how she struggled with the initial diagnosis of her daughter and how she's learned to not only cope but thrive with two lovely autistic children in her life.

Talking ABIA: Autism Awareness
In 2015 a five-year-old informed Monique Cain that her daughter Madie was ‘dumb’ and ‘didn’t know anything’. Heartbreaking, gobsmacking, and confounding, the comment got Monique thinking. How could she convey to others that Madi was different not dumb; that her autism might make her act differently, but she has the same need for inclusion and kindness, the same requirement to belong and be loved. How could Monique help others see the Madi she saw: a courageous, valuable treasured, capable and unique child?
In this podcast Monique Cain talks about creation of The Everyday Autism Series, a set of children’s picture books that provide an understanding of autism through a child’s eyes. Tune in to hear Monique & Madi’s story. Hear how Monique courageously turned a negative into a positive.
Kinderling: Educating on Autism Through Books
Monique Cain’s daughter Maddy was nonverbal until five years of age. Both teachers and children at her daughter’s kindergarten didn’t understand Maddy, so Monique wrote a book to help explain what was going on in her world.
